- Usually live in groups, called pods, of around 15 dolphins
- Their diet normally consists of crustaceans, squid and small fish
- Bottlenose dolphins can stay under water for up to 20 minutes
- Adult Bottlenose dolphins are usually around 2.5 metres in length and 250 kilograms in weight
- They can swim at speeds of close to 35 kilometres per hour, although only for short bursts
- Their life expectancy is anything from 20 to 40 years
- Research shows that bottlenose dolphins are capable of understand numerical values
- Large sharks and some orca populations have been known to prey on dolphins
- However, water pollution and commercial fishing are their biggest threats
