- Adelie Penguins live in Antartica and the surrounding islands
- They were named by the French explorer Jules Dumont d’Urville, who gave them the name ‘Adelie’ after his wife Adele
- There are an estimated 5 million Adelie Penguins in the wild, contained in 38 different colonies
- They have been known to dive as deep as 175 metres
- They can swim as fast as 45 miles per hour
- Their diet consists of small fish, squid and shrill
- They weigh up to 12lbs and are approximately 70cm tall
- October to February is their breeding season
- Each year they swim around 13,000 kilometres
- Leopard seals are the main natural predator of adult Adelie Penguins
- Over the past 25 years populations have fallen by 65% due to food shortages and ice melting
